The main reason why local authorities use application forms is likely to be due to fairness in the selection process. With application forms, all applicants answer exactly the same questions. This makes it is easier to compare candidates and to give each answer a score. They then decide who to bring in to interview based on a number, which brings a certain amount of transparency and fairness to the hiring process.

Hiring in many organisations isn't as process-driven as hiring in local authorities, and so the CV is generally seen as a quick and easy way to evaluate candidates.

Thank you Tony for your post. If you take a look at the CV Writing link on the top right hand side of this page (in the Career Advice box), you'll find our CV Font post. Your CV's text should be left aligned as this makes it easier to read. Headings can be centre aligned though.

I am nearly 64 years old, with good technical skills, experienced and motivated. I was made redundant 11 months ago. I don't want to be on the scrapheap & would like to work. I have tried to obtain work but now feel that my age is against me. Should I just retire gracefully?

I'd like some advice on CV writing.

Mainly from a graphological aspect as I feel my CV may appear somewhat juvenile in it's lay out. As it stands my CV is centre aligned. Would it appear more proffessional if it were left aligned? And what size font would you recommend?
